These global conflicts were barriers for the generations growing up in this moment peacefully because they were surrounded by destruction and unprecedented loss of life, with over 70 million people dying, including soldiers and civilians. Millions of people were displaced. Entire families were devastated, and countless individuals experienced severe trauma. Thus, The Silent Generation, born during or just after the war, grew up amidst the aftermath of global grief and recovery.

However, as we move on later through this era, we notice that there has been a shift between these technological creations. They had become more focused towards entertainment like computers, video games, internet & networking, cell phones, consoles, and more. This transformation demonstrates how these generations were now less concentrated on warfare and more on societal advancements. 

Social & Cultural Changes Between the 1940s & 1990s

There were countless societal changes in this era. This includes social movements for civil rights and equality amongst different races and genders, rapid economic growth counter cultures like the hippie movements, the rise of television and personal entertainment, and globalization. It depicts how society was moving away from war and fighting for survival and towards doing things for themselves, fighting for equality, embracing who they wanted to be, and dressing as they liked. However, no world wars are occurring where many countries are in conflict and fighting, but the conflicts present in these regions are causing devastation for their people and living state.

Being raised around these conflicts can be hard for current generations because they observe as this destruction occurs firsthand through social media and technology, which leads us to our next component. 

Technological Advancement In the Era Of Recent Generations

Technology has drastically evolved in this period, which improved the quality of life for today’s generation. Social media has played a prominent role in recent years, with smartphones and the internet becoming almost indispensable for survival. Calls, texts, emails, and instant messaging are the default methods of communication for personal and professional interactions. With cellular networks and internet access, phones enable instant communication across the globe using platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. News, weather, critical updates, and financial transactions, including online banking, digital wallets, bill payments and other necessities are delivered through smartphones.

Technology has evolved even more with artificial intelligence. In contrast, if these devices are not deemed perceived positively, they are a gateway to harming a child’s mental health due to cyberbullying and influencers portraying their life in an untrue manner.

Side Effects Of Advanced Technology On the Environment

A large amount of technology is used everywhere, which is immensely fruitful for today’s generation’s survival, although it is still a reason for harming human lives. Due to the heavy usage of technology, our environment is affected significantly. Everyday digital actions like sending emails, uploading photos, or using search engines contribute to global emissions. For instance, A single email with an attachment can emit 50g of CO₂, while streaming a video for an hour releases approximately 36g of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

In 2023, the earth’s average surface temperature reached an all-time high, contributing to the global warming issue. The earth’s surface is exceptionally warm due to the increased use of greenhouse gases, which elevates carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere. This heightened heat causes ice caps and glaciers to melt, as the oceans absorb 90% of the excess heat, leading to rising sea levels. This creates a domino effect, prompting society to focus more on environmental issues and methods to reduce the use of greenhouse gases.
