How Do Uniforms Affect Students?

Why do students prefer casual clothes for school? In the view of my colleagues and me, wearing a school uniform is an outdated and impractical notion, which we no longer feel is crucial. Despite this fact, the school council surveyed the number of students who want to dress up casually for school, and the result they achieved, 78% of students prefer to wear casual clothes to school.

School uniforms are unpopular with students. They find them uncomfortable and consider they are too restrictive. Students think comfortable outfits are more suitable for concentrating on their activities and work in school. If they are constantly fiddling with stiff collars, itchy trousers and uncomfortable shoes, this distracts them from the task at hand. Moreover, this distracts trainees from learning. Therefore, wearing casual clothes could improve and lengthen their learning time, ultimately impacting and enhancing their school achievement.

What is the purpose of wearing uniforms at school? Is it necessary for students to buy them?

The tradition of wearing school uniforms has undoubtedly existed for centuries. Uniforms foster uniformity by ensuring everyone wears the same clothes and shares a single identity. They reduce competition among children regarding who has the more expensive outfits and who is the most fashionable, saving children from bullying and judgment.
Uniforms represent a school’s identity, and wearing them boosts kids’ morale; they feel pride in belonging to a well-known school. Additionally, it reduces the budget that parents spend annually on new clothes for school. If kids or parents are brand-conscious, purchasing expensive clothes becomes more challenging for parents. Uniforms also save kids’ and parents’ time and energy spent on selecting outfits each day. Rather than worrying about daily dress choices, kids can focus on completing their homework or engaging in other beneficial recreational activities. In this manner, uniforms help parents save money.
Students can express themselves in other spheres of life, such as participation in the arts, academics, sports, or extracurricular activities. This helps them develop their inner skills. Therefore, even if uniforms are not worn all day, I believe it’s a healthy practice that keeps students on track. Furthermore, it boosts students’ confidence, enhances their inner skills, and frees their minds from the stress of unnecessary concerns, allowing them to perform at their best.

Everyone has the right to self-expression. However, uniforms limit students’ choice of clothing. They assume that school dress codes restrain their ability to express individuality and deprive them of the freedom to support social causes.

The drawback of uniforms is that they can be costly. A good quality school uniform that lasts does not come cheap! Indeed, the exemption of uniforms is an aid to saving the amount that could be put towards the school fund to buy new books or other stationery for our home, so we can effectively complete our homework.

Finally, our parents would benefit from the move to not wearing the school uniform. Wearing casual clothes would mean there would be no lack of options. Besides, parents would no longer have the obsessed Sunday rush of getting their kids’ uniforms washed and ironed in time for Monday. Plus, all the excuses for not wearing the uniform will be gone as our parents did not get it cleaned in time! It would also reduce the amount that our parents pay for our clothing.

I believe school councils should abandon school uniforms in favour of more cost-effective and practical home clothes.
